American social activist, Anna Jarvis is the founder of the modern Mothers’ Day. At the encouragement of her mother, Anna Jarvis attended college and was awarded a diploma for the completion of two years of course work.
One of the earliest records of Mothers Day can be seen in the ancient annual spring festival of the Greeks devoted to the mother goddess. They celebrated Rhea, the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.
Mothering Sunday was celebrated in the 1600s in England. Cakes and gifts were given to the mother by her children.
