Mother’s Day inspired Father’s Day
In USA, Father’s Day was celebrated in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in appreciating fathers and male parenting. The credit goes to Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington who struggled that Father’s Day should be given equal importance as Mother’s Day. She loved her father deeply who had raised her and five other children with love and care after their mother passed away.
Father’s Day was unaccepted – it threatened ‘manhood’
There have many attempts to recognize Father’s Day in USA but had been turned down repeatedly. They “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving”. It was Richard Nixon who made Father’s Day a federal holiday officially.
Oldest Father’s Day
The oldest Father’s Day can be traced to Babylon at least 4,000 years ago on a card made out of clay. A young boy called Elmesu carved this Father’s Day message. He wished his father healthy and a long life.
Thailand celebrates birth date of king as Father’s day
December 5 is the birthday of the present king, Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). That day Thais they give their father or grandfather a canna flower. They wear yellow on this day which is the color for Monday, the day King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born.
Father’s Day is not only for a ‘father’
On Father’s Day one may present Father’s Day cards or gifts not just to their biological father but also to grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers or any other person who commands the position or has been a fatherly presence in their life.
